It’s Unlikely We’ll See Oculus Rift in 2015

If you were hoping to strap on an Oculus Rift this year, it looks like you are going to have to wait. During its Q1 2015 Earnings Call, Facebook seemed to downplay any hopes for a release of a consumer model of the much-anticipated Virtual Reality headset in 2015.  Facebook CFO Dave Wehner stated that “We have not announced any specific plans for shipment volumes in 2015 related to Oculus.”

Wehner went on to call Oculus a “long-term growth area,” which seems to suggest that Facebook is not in any hurry to rush the product out before they feel it’s ready.  Recently, Oculus VR was also vague when asked for a release date for the headset at a SXSW panel that it attended.

With industry excitement growing for the new technology, companies are in a race to get a consumer-friendly model out to market.  Oculus Rift is one of a few front-runners, along with Valve’s HTC Vive and Sony’s Project Morpheus.  Valve’s headset has been promised to release this year – stay tuned.
